Board Purpose:

The primary responsibility and obligation of the Oklahoma Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners as specified in Title 59 Sec. 698.1 et seq and Title 774 of the Oklahoma Administrative Code is to protect the public from the unprofessional, improper, incompetent and unlawful practice of veterinary medicine.  Laws, rules and regulations governing the granting and subsequent use of the privilege to practice veterinary medicine are conferred on the Board by the citizens of the State of Oklahoma, acting through their elected representatives. Additionally, the duties of proceeding against the unprofessional and unlawful practice of veterinary medicine and enforcing the Veterinary Practice Act is also delegated to the Board as specified in the above referenced statutes and administrative codes.

Who Regulates:

The Oklahoma Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners is comprised of five licensed Veterinarian members and one lay person representing the general public, who set licensing and continued competency standards, administer entry level tests, act on complaints and discipline those found guilty of misconduct.

Why Regulations:

Regulation of Veterinarians, Registered Veterinary Technicians and Certified Euthanasia Technicians includes educational requirements, entry level standards, examination for licensure and certification, continued competency, advertising standards, quality of care, adherence to civil and criminal laws and professional regulations.

Everyone is entitled to safe and competent health care for their pets and livestock. To assure that the public interest is rotected, Oklahoma requires that the providers of veterinary services obtain licenses or certificates to practice their profession. The vast majority of Oklahoma's 2000+ Veterinarians are ethical and competent professionals. Those who violate laws may be disciplined and face possible loss of their licenses or certificates.
